1968
Pink Floyd announce that Syd Barrett has officially left the group due to psychiatric disorders compounded by drug use.
1971
The Rolling Stones release ‘Sticky Fingers’. The artwork on the cover features a real zipper that opens to reveal a man in cotton briefs and was conceived by Andy Warhol.
1976
Keith Moon allegedly pays nine cab drivers to block off both ends of a New York street so that he can throw the entire contents of his hotel room out of the window.
1977
Legendary Disco club Studio 54 opens for business. The club grosses over 7 million dollars in it’s first year. It would close it’s doors only three years later.
1978
John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd make their first ever appearance as The Blues Brothers on Saturday Night Live.
1980
32 year old singer Brian Johnson joins AC/DC, replacing Bon Scott, who died from a drinking binge.
1982
Joe Strummer disappears for three weeks, causing the Clash to cancel a tour. He is found living rough in Paris.
1984
Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ spends it’s 37th week at Number 1 on the US Album Chart – the longest run in Pop history.
1987
For the first time, a CD version of an album is released before the vinyl version. The album is ‘The Art Of Excellence’ by Tony Bennett.
1992
Billy Idol pleads no contest to punching a woman in the face. He is fined and told he has to make pubic service announcements against drug and alcohol use.
1994
An electrician, Gary Smith, working in Kurt Cobain’s house finds his body lying on the floor in the greenhouse. A shotgun is lying next to his body and it is believed that he committed suicide three days earlier.
1996
Rapper Hammer (formerly known as MC Hammer) files for bankruptcy after spending over thirty million dollars he made from the sales of his album ‘Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt Them’.
